Frontal: Berlin Images

East Berlin photographers Mirko Zander and Matthias Nickelmann spent two years combing the streets of the city to find their subjects. The result, currently on show at the alternative Brotfabrik arts centre, is a series of 170 portraits of ‘ordinary Berliners’. From surly pensioners to mad-eyed artists and the yuppies who now inhabit the newly gentrified areas of the East, the people depicted in ‘Frontale: Berliner Bildnisse’ appear to come from every walk of life. Set against a white background, the prints are strangely revealing in what they say both about the ever-changing city and its inhabitants.
