Matisse and his Models
This exhibition offers an intriguing take on the ouevre of Henri Matisse, the French artist who ranks second only to Picasso as the most influential painter and sculptor of the 20th-century. All of the works on display focus on the subject, usually female, as much as the artist, and the selection of pieces cover much of Matisse’s long career, which stretched until the 1950s, when he was in his eighties. In his works, Matisse said he sought to create something as comfortable on the eye ‘as an old armchair’. Unlike an old chair, though, his brilliance has not faded with the years.
