An extremely welcome addition to Lisbon’s still woefully limited selection of Italian eateries, this swish restaurant in the downtown business district scores on several fronts. The service is attentive and not too formal, the interior is light and cheerfully decorated and the food… well, what a difference a little imagination makes. Unlike the handful of other Italian restaurants in Lisbon, this place knows what to do with vegetables. The mixed vegetable platter is a delight to the eye and the palate, and the grilled aubergine with goat’s cheese has to be tasted to be believed.

This all-new operatic production of Vincenzo Bellini’s ‘The Capulets and the Montagues’, based on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, features mezzo sensation Susanne Mentzer as the male lead and soprano Laura Claycomb as Giuletta. Sweeping melodies and romantic songs accompany the star-crossed love story.

Next to the beautiful Novodevichy monastery, Moo Moo is a delightful children’s restaurant dressed as a welcoming farmer’s kitchen. Large black and white spots come straight off the cows to decorate the tables, chairs and napkins. The cook squeezes inside a fairy tale house to prepare the food and the menu is heavily milk-based, pancakes with sweetened condensed milk for 40 rubles is a local favourite. The food is very reasonable with dishes from 15 to 142 rubles.

A host of Russian pop stars turned out for the recent opening of Barmaley, a new club owned by singer Oleg Gazmanov. It hasn’t exactly got the hippest name in club history - Barmaley was the pirate in a Russian version of the Dr Dolittle story - but it’s housed in an elegant 18th-century mansion. Despite the pop star crowd, the club is aiming for the masses with beer starting at 25R. In September a 200 seat cinema will open in the venue.

20 years after rap’s birth in the Bronx, hip hoppers everywhere are still trying to tackle its tricky Oedipal relationship with mother Africa. Parisian Passi and his booming eight-strong outfit work it out better than most, with spot-on earthy lyrics and a lilting calypso edge that has already earned their ace new album, ‘Les Racines’, a place in the car stereos of countless Parisian yoofs.

Prague’s newest Celtic bar doesn’t just offer weekend brunch specials of around 250Kc (£4.50) and an over-the-top vibe, thanks to the wildly whimsical murals of local artist Stuart Moore. It’s also done its homework, invoking through its name the connection with Boii tribes of ancient Bohemia, believed by archaeologists to be the original Celts. Add to that appeal a fine dark beer and big-screen sport coverage, and you have a clear winner.
